Favorite Novels

Abarat, by Clive Barker, (notice the cool title - it's spelled the same forward and backward!) is my favorite fantasy novel. Barker is famous for his amazing art, both on the cover of Abarat and throughout the book, but his writing is just as colorful. The book is about Candy, a misunderstood teen who stumbles across a strange man after skipping school. He leads her into the sinister and magical world of Abarat, featuring 25 islands - one for each hour of the day, plus one extra. Candy is a relatable character with a creative mind. The creatures who inhabit Abarat are interesting and fantastical. I loved the pictures and the description in this book!

This was a favorite book from my childhood. Harvey is a young boy stuck in a boring town. He travels through the mist after being led by a toothy man into a beautiful home. The house holds every food, toy, and game Harvey wants, along with a few friends to keep him company. Soon however, Harvey finds that the perfect house is not what it seems. Eerie things start happening, and eventually Harvey leads a revolution to overthrow the dark forces which control the home.

The Collector by John Fowles gave me nightmares! I was terrified of the creepy narrarator! It's about a young lady who is kidnapped and held hostage in the clutches of a creepy young man who collects butterflies. He gives her all kinds of food, books, and clothing, but understandably, she rejects his affection. Eventually he must decide whether to set her free or kill her with his selfishness.

American Psycho is my all time favorite book. We follow Patrick Bateman as he struggles with conformity, materialism, and his unfortunate habit of murdering everyone he meets. I absolutely love his personality - it's almost comical how blunt he is with his kills and foul language. He is able to kill and torture dozens of people without being noticed - even when he admits it in public! This book is both grotesquely graphic and hilarious!
