DIY: Fabric Covered Bulletin Board

DIY Time! Fabric Covered Bulletin Board Tutorial:

Okay, here's what you'll need:
Scrap fabric
Scissors
Cork (in any shape or size!)
A glue gun (ignore my stapler... that did not work out so well!)

This adorable mini cork board only requires one step: Stretch the fabric over the board (pin or tape in place if you'd like) and hot glue it to the edges! After I glued it down, I went around the edges and cut off excess fabric. PS: I made these cork circles out of one big, paint splattered bulletin board! Yay for recycling!

I found that stretchy fabric worked the best, but any properly sized cloth will work. I used some thrifted, ill-fitting dresses for my fabric! What do you think? Here is the URL to the original tutorial (in Spanish): http://www.muyingenioso.com/tablon-de-notas-con-salvamanteles-de-ikea/

Thrift Haul: May 25

Here is my thrift haul from earlier today! I usually shop at the local Hospice Thrift Store in my town.

Hello everyone! This morning I went with one of my best friends to a thrift store! My total came out to $9.58! Here is what I purchased:

1. A wide (brand new!) brown belt
2. A copy of The Catcher in the Rye (for just a nickel!)
3. Also for five cents, I purchased a gold and turquoise photo album, originally from Target.
3. A bright Cobalt Blue pencil skirt (the tag was ripped out, so I'm not sure where it was originally from...)
4. This gorgeous black leather evening clutch with golden metal hardware - not sure of the brand.
5. A bright yellow hair barrette!
6. (Not pictured) A huge box of yarn. I love to knit!
7. A wire basket for my bookshelf.

I also brought in a few books and clothing items to donate. Thrifting is so much fun - it's my favorite hobby. The best part? It's all cheap! What do you think of my haul? Leave a comment below!

Favorite Novels

Abarat, by Clive Barker, (notice the cool title - it's spelled the same forward and backward!) is my favorite fantasy novel. Barker is famous for his amazing art, both on the cover of Abarat and throughout the book, but his writing is just as colorful. The book is about Candy, a misunderstood teen who stumbles across a strange man after skipping school. He leads her into the sinister and magical world of Abarat, featuring 25 islands - one for each hour of the day, plus one extra. Candy is a relatable character with a creative mind. The creatures who inhabit Abarat are interesting and fantastical. I loved the pictures and the description in this book!

This was a favorite book from my childhood. Harvey is a young boy stuck in a boring town. He travels through the mist after being led by a toothy man into a beautiful home. The house holds every food, toy, and game Harvey wants, along with a few friends to keep him company. Soon however, Harvey finds that the perfect house is not what it seems. Eerie things start happening, and eventually Harvey leads a revolution to overthrow the dark forces which control the home.

The Collector by John Fowles gave me nightmares! I was terrified of the creepy narrarator! It's about a young lady who is kidnapped and held hostage in the clutches of a creepy young man who collects butterflies. He gives her all kinds of food, books, and clothing, but understandably, she rejects his affection. Eventually he must decide whether to set her free or kill her with his selfishness.

American Psycho is my all time favorite book. We follow Patrick Bateman as he struggles with conformity, materialism, and his unfortunate habit of murdering everyone he meets. I absolutely love his personality - it's almost comical how blunt he is with his kills and foul language. He is able to kill and torture dozens of people without being noticed - even when he admits it in public! This book is both grotesquely graphic and hilarious!

What are your favorite books? Genre? Author? Comment below and let me know!

Thrift Shopping

Hello all,

Today I will be discussing resale and thrift shopping with you all! In my town, there a few thrift shops, and a couple of consignment boutiques. Every opportunity I get, I head over to my town's shopping district and search for deals! As of recently (I think Macklemore has to do with this!), thrifting has finally been viewed as a cool, budget-friendly past time. Especially among hipsters! I have always enjoyed getting the most for my money, so thrift shopping is perfect for me! The excitement of walking into a boutique and getting the chance to dig through unique clothes is amazing! I have found tons of shirts, costume jewelry, and even shoes (which are a little harder to find) at my local thrift stores. Here are my tips for thrift shopping!

1. Bring a friend! An honest friend will help you find a piece that flatters your body and your wallet. Also, having a friend will you another point of view of different styles and combinations that you might not have thought of!

2. Have an open mind! Many people think thrift stores are dirty. This is not true! And of course, you may come across a few stained clothes. These can be easily washed! And for the price that they're probably listed at, it's well worth the effort. There are tons of hidden, sometimes designer gems hidden on thrift store shelves! Don't be afraid to try new things. Many shops even have dressing rooms for you to try on potential purchases!

3. Always donate old clothes. Recycling your clothes is good for you and the environment! It frees up space in your closet while reusing garments you may have grown out of. Some thrift shops even donate part of their profit to charities! Donating your out grown clothing is both good for others and for yourself.

4. Sample. Before splurging on a huge item of clothing, check out your local thrift store and sample a similar item there for less. This will give you a feel of your desired purchase (whether it's a trench coat or a pair of high waisted jeans) without breaking the bank.

I hope you found these tips helpful! What's your best thrift store find? Have you gone thrifting before? Comment below!

When Kelly asked me to guest blog here on Literature and Lace, I was wondering what I could write about. I do love to read, but when it comes to reviews I’m likely to tell you it was great and then reveal every detail of the book. To avoid that, I decided to write about the only type of writing that I do consistently; Journaling.

I feel like journaling is an activity that seems easy- but that so may people have a hard time getting started with. In my elementary years I always wanted to keep a journal. I wanted the pretty covers, the cute keys and locks, and the pens, and I wanted to write romantic things about being in love. Well, I was not in love and I hated locking and unlocking my journal every time I wanted to write. Needless to say, I did not get into keeping a journal back then.

Over the past two years I have really come to enjoy journaling. Here are some tips that I have learned that helped me get into journaling consistently.

1)     No Pressure. I guess I’m a rebel. Every time that I convince myself that something must be done, and place pressure on myself to do it, I immediately self sabotage. This habit of avoiding or refusing to do things that I put pressure on myself to do made me avoid journaling for quite some time.  What has worked best for me now is to think of journaling as a calming time where I can relax. If I have time to do it, good. If I don’t have time or I don’t make time, oh well.  Being more laid back about journaling makes me more likely to sit down and write.

2)     Write Freely. I write about anything that I want to in my journal. I write about events, feelings, food, people, and hopes and dreams for the future. I write things in my journal that I would never say to someone in real life. I write about emotions that I feel that I try to repress in daily life. I write whatever I feel like writing. When I first started journaling I thought that I had to write every detail of my day in chronological order. Instead of sticking to the regular flow of daily life, try writing what stands out to you most and go from there. One of my favorite parts about journaling is the ability that it gives me to express my emotions and thoughts. Getting them out on paper makes my head a much calmer place.

3)     Grammar Police. Guess what? There aren’t any in your journal (unless you are one!). You are not tied to writing in complete sentences, with proper punctuation, or even in a line.  You are the ruler of your journal and if you spell every word wrong, but you can tell what it says, then that’s ok. You are the only one who is going to read it so, be free!

4)     Privacy. This is one thing that is very important about journaling. You need to be able to write in confidence that your thoughts and emotions are private. Unfortunately, when I was younger my mom read my journal and was upset at me for some of the things that I had written. I was a good kid and my journal did not reveal huge terrible secrets, but having my emotions and thoughts laid bare to judgment was scaring. I did not dare to write a journal for years after that. When you write a journal keep in mind that it may be found and someone may not respect your privacy. I suggest keeping your journal put away or hidden so that it is not out in the open for anyone to find and read.

5)     Time. When you journal is important. I find that journaling at night while preparing to go to sleep is the best time for me. Journaling before I sleep helps me to not lay awake forever at night worrying, or harassing myself over the events of the day or emotions that I’m feeling. Viewing journaling as dumping off the stress of the day before bed helps me to journal more consistently. If I attempted to journal in the morning I would never have time to do it.

6)     Make it Pretty. One of my favorite parts about journaling is owning the pretty books.  I love the patterns on the covers. I love the ribbons that hold my place. I love using special pens to write different parts of my entries. When you start journaling having a special book can make it more fun to write. Also take note of what size your handwriting is; for me small journals are too small for my huge handwriting. I work best with a medium sized journal that I can take around with me if needed.

I hope that these tips are useful to you. Do you journal? What are your tips for beginner journalists? What do you love most about journaling? Did you use any of my advice when starting your own journal?

Have fun writing,

How to style polka dots

How to style polka dots

Polka dots: my absolute favorite print! It's so girly and versatile! Here's how I would wear one shirt two ways - one for work and one for a casual day! What do you think? The Dooney and Bourke bag is my fave!
The black and white trend is so popular right now, making polka dots even more wearable. But polka dots come in every color combination! Pink and white, yellow and orange, blue and green... you get it.
This girly print is sure to make a great addition to your spring wardrobe!

Suffer the Children by John Saul

Suffer the Children by John Saul is about a mysterious, conflict plagued family (the Congers) living on a beautiful estate. The home is host to a dangerous forest and a mysterious embankment. Local legend claims there is a secret cave hidden on the Conger's piece of shore.
The family of four (plus their elderly housekeeper) experience many tragedies and surprises during on eventful autumn, after one by one, children begin disappearing.
The Novel contains a twist in every chapter and allows the reader to experience many point of views during the story, revealing the gruesome truth behind the mounting disappearances. Although Saul leaves many questions unanswered, Suffer the Children is definitely worth reading.

Silence of the Lambs

Hello all,
So this week I began reading The Silence of the Lambs! We're testing this week at school, so I've had a ton of time to read it, and I can not put it down! It's so great. This novel is written by Thomas Harris. As many of you know, it's also a movie (which I also really enjoyed!). This book is so disturbing, creepy, realistic, and fast paced! There is never a dull moment as the reader travels with Clarice Starling in her quest to locate Buffalo Bill before it's too late. Harris is fearless in his writing and description of the mental hospitals Clarice visits. My favorite part of the book is that the story is told from the third person, and every other chapter (or so) we get a glimpse of other character's and their dire situations. This novel is worth reading - just make sure you have lots of time to read it so you don't have to put it down!

Trending: Black and White

Black and White

Here's a professional take on the latest spring trend! I love the clean cut look of this outfit, especially the Betsey Johnson earrings! Another good thing about black and white is that there's a lot of room for pops of color in a pair of earrings or in your footwear!

Fashion Staple: White Button Down

White Button Down Shirt

My favorite piece in my entire closet is my white button up shirt! I have worn it so many times, and it's super comfy too! I've paired it with red jeans and leopard flats, pleated skirts, and pencil skirts! What would you wear with a white button down? What do you think of these outfits?

Thanks,
Kelly

The Great Gatsby

As many of you know, May 10th marks the premiere of the new film, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Great Gatsby! True to my in inner literature nerd, I am so excited to see this movie! The book is  truly incredible - Fitzgerald paints a whole new world for us in a rather short novel. The fast paced book is unique in that we find things out as the narrator does. Plus, I've always admired the beautiful cover art of the book.  Another great thing about the Great Gatsby movie? We get to drool over all the flapper style twenties clothing! I can't wait! Have you read the Great Gatsby? What's your favorite classic? Leave a comment below!
Have a great day,
Kelly
